Who Likes Stuff?
Jul. 3rd, 2008 01:36 amSo there's this idea I've been toying with for awhile (April-ish?), and have mentioned before under Das Flock whilst (word used just for you,
aralias) trying to figure out/get a read on what would be a good idea to write. Sometimes I do plotting by committee. Anyway: it was basically an alt!Series 10, now even slashier, with Master also trapped on Earth, even-more-reluctantly-than-the-Doctor working for UNIT. Summer turned out to be insane-busy, so I haven't had a chance to finish a whooole lot of things, let alone get to work on the plotting of this beast. BUT I did read a lot of wiki, almost finish a lot of eps before Getting Distracted, and make a playlist. Not a proper mix, b/c too long and no art, but have a shippy Three/Master Alt!Series soundtrackish thing?
PLAYLIST
Track List and Justifications:
So not all of this is period, obviously. But some of it is. And some of it is retro-sounding. And some of it is blatantly modern. *shrug*
My Little Shirtwaist Fire Rasputina
Atmosphere, really. I love the hectic violin viciousness of it.
Witchcraft Wolfmother
Please stop summoning things, Delgado!Master, and please stop listening to this song and feeling cool.
Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt (Better Version) We Are Scientists
Shippy. Also the grittier, exhibition-version, pre-album version of the song before they got a contract and over-produced it. Also I love the band name in this context. And womg crescendo.
Hang Me Up To Dry Cold War Kids
The intro rhythm is almost a slow, persistent tease, innit? And the weary hoarseness of the chorus wins. Oh, and then the baseline cuts in! 'Hot water bleeding our colors' wins as a euphemism. All told there's a Master-y cool snark to it.
Hospital Beds Cold War Kids
Lotsa people read the homoerotic into this song, so it's not just my crazed appropriation. Depressing and desolate, people forced together by circumstance, v. good war or exiled TLs song.
We Need A War Fischerspooner
Cheerfully murderous. Also Also Wik hypnotized!vibes.
War Dogs Juno Reactor
Grandiose, lush and ridiculous. Also /great/ 'plans going down' music. Wait, this is weird, I feel like Master gets more songs than Three on this list? Must remedy that.
Skin Is, My Andrew Bird
Andrew Bird is clear and eerie and works well for them. Really a lot of his stuff could have gone on here.
Harrowdown Hill Thom Yorke
About Brit political resistance to the Iraq war? Co-opted for the schoolboy nostalgia, the commiserating over being used by the High Council Man, and the smugly self-contented 'we're so connected, no one understands us but us' vibe of the lyrics.
Skip Divided Thom Yorke
IN WHICH MASTER EMOS ABOUT HIS LURVE. And feels pathetic and dislikes himself about it and still can't stop. I mean the lyrical climax near the end--this song is short, tight, composed, admirable in its restraint/build-up and the way it brings it back after the break with a tiny chorus/denoumont.
Atoms For Peace Thom Yorke
I don't even love this song as compared to the rest of the album, but the lyrics were too perfect.
Analyse Thom Yorke
Mathy and perfect for them. Really this album gets a lot of grabs for the contained energy of its sound and tight, un-indulgent 'melancholy coupled with intelligence' of the lyrics. Which still manage to come off poetic. I do like this album a good deal.
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger Daft Punk
Master's personal anthem? Also a goddamn classic. Good for actiony sequences.
why dont we do it in the road The Beatles
If I have to explain these, you never saw the eps and thought the same damn thing.
The Sheik Of Araby The Beatles
Pfft. Oh, listen to the lyrics and see above. This is every Evol Plan he's ever made.
Earth Intruders (Radio Edit) Björk
Oh man, every invasion force in that entire era, for realz.
Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect The Decemberists
Private joke to self from Killing the Groundhog. Also about how sex doesn't fix stuff. And how you can't protect anyone you love from anything. And an architect going on about angles.
Odalisque The Decemberists
Like the Rasputina, it's the archaic formal viciousness for atmosphere. Also my former favorite band, so lingering fondness.
World In My Eyes Depeche Mode
Plz to be understanding and ascribing to my worldview, estranged ex-bf?
Sweetest Perfection Depeche Mode
"Liking you is a bad, bad idea. Also I recognize that I'm obsessed and do cruel, stupid things to get your attention." Also, like a lot of Depeche Mode, OTT in a kinda awesome way.
How Could I Forget The Faint
Manically technological. Sort of a rising panic in the jarring, mixed elements which refuses to let up or settle into comfortable familiarity.
Viva la Vida Coldplay
OH MY GOD LYRICS. Really. The direct 'sound of drums' bit. And here I thought I'd never forgive the band for "Yellow." If this is plagiarism like the band suing them says, Coldplay should steal more often. Also violins. Why do I associate Delgado!Master with violins, again? I mean, I get why I think Him + Theremins OTP, but strings?
When Your Mind's Made Up Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Shut up. It's fluff time. I'll steal from Once unabashedly. Also have you tried changing either of those two's minds?
Starless and Bible Black King Crimson
Okay, so in Mind of Evil in the car Delgado!Master's radio statics, and he irritably switches it to King Crimson and listens. Which is great b/c 1) period, 2) CANON LITTLE TOUCH OF BRILLIANCE, and 3) it made me realize how much he freaking loves King Crimson, and, like, the thirty reasons for that. Including that he's too still cool to admit to liking Tool*, their self-proclaimed bastard stepchild of sound. Layered harmonies and dissonance and range, oh my! So you get several of theirs.
21st Century Schizoid Man King Crimson
Three of a Perfect Pair King Crimson
One More Red Nightmare King Crimson
we walk the ting tings
Just listen to the first verse. Also, this mix needed a bouncy. And they see the changes in things that come. Total TLs. It's sort of a happyish-as-they-get wrap-up song.
*Ainley!Master has gotten over it and bought albums. Jacobi!Master only indulges after Dalek-Killing. Simm!Master can't remember shame.
