I saw this, from the hilarious and disturbing Garfield Minus Garfield Project, and read a terrible truth into it:

The Sound Of Drums The Sound Of Drums

In Which John Hears The Drums.

...my brain has been warped by fandom. what is the actual point of that comic strip?

From: [identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
Presumably before 'Garfield Without Garfield' got ahold of it, the cat made some commentary/there were other lines that drew a thin veil over the obvious madness lurking within John's tortured soul were of a humorous nature.

Do you get Garfield in the UK or other American Saturday morning strips? I assume you must have your own for reasons of topicality. Garfield is one of those classically unfunny ones that Newspapers can't shake because it has a nostalgia-following, is guaranteed never to offend anyone ever because it's too bland, and people expect to see it, despite the fact that it's now boring beyond all excuse. Others would include Annie, the Family Circus, For Better Or For Worse, etc.

...i just realised i never replied to this comment. my memory is funny like that. i was off looking for david tennant as casanova icons (as you do)(well, as i do anyway), and i came across someone with a garfield icon i thought 'i never said whether we had garfield or not' and then i felt bad so i am here to tell you that.... we do! and it is often not funny, but that is the perogative of comic strips really. mainly we have larson or 'matt' in proper newspapers though. and garfield and nemi and other really really not funny comics in the free and lower order papers.

wasn't that interesting?

yes... of course it was.

ha. Wait, who's Matt?

Oh, have wiki'd Nemi! I'd never heard of that. Though Garfield/Family Circus/general wretchedness etc are our paid Saturday Morning Comics offerings x_x, so ya'll win.

i actually quite like garfield sometimes, but the tv show was unbearable.

From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
THEN DO IT! I am like, such a slut for rair pair. I swear to god, I no one plays with me :(

Speaking of: how come I've never seen a Doctor/Master icon, of any of their previous incarnations, that says "Frenemies?" I AM SHOCKED.

From: [identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
Book slash, which is so rare you mostly have to go on some epic safari for it, is my not-secret crack, and you're right, it is a lonely playground (why does no one write Amadeus the movie slash either?).

I'd also read Davita/her step-brother who's so obviously into her fic. Where's THAT? It's sad when Jeeves/Wooster is like, your BIG book fandom.

Why oh why did I never previously understand the need for "Frenemies"?!

I'll write the fic if you make that glorious icon. ;p

Date: 2008-03-01 06:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
UM UM UM! I can do that.

On the note of Amadeus: I mean, really, right? That movie is like painfully awash in slashy subtext. Salieri is basically drooling all over Mozart for most of the film - I mean, when he's not fucking with him in an effort to inspire his downfall...but in my twisted mind that's sort of just another brand of drooling. You've seen [livejournal.com profile] fiendling's Amadeus fanart, right? And furthermore, because you totally just tapped into one of my, er, quirks, they could have gotten Constanze in on that action, too! Salieri would have loved that noise.

Okay, I'm done here. Off to make an icon.

I slash Doctor/Master, so I HAVE to agree with your rationale here as a prerequisite.

But that movie is so achingly slashful, it's true! Like at the end? If he'd lived? When Salieri had that ultimate moment of connection/forgiveness/artistic inspiration due to collaboration? They could have gone to Italy and Mozart could have recovered and Salieri could have become a better artist because of gaining that understanding and they could have had LOTS of sex. Obviously.

Oh Constanze. Such a squeeze-box. Noisy but cute.

Nooooo I have not seen it! Off to go look! Clearly I have to do homework (man does semester before graduation suck), and re-peruse Chosen tonight, that I might better slash it.

Date: 2008-03-01 06:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
Lots of sex! Lots of it! But there would always have been a hint of bitterness on Salieri's part, bitterness intermingled with worshipful hate and lust all battered back by Mozart's delightfully childish ability to forgive, embrace, drink a little bit more, and write the songs of angels. Ahem.

Hello, we've just met. Semester before graduation is an absolute shit-show. Every time I do something morally ambiguous I just tell people it's because I'm a senior in college. Carte fucking blanche, baby.

But can he do it while getting buggered? Inquiring Salieris want to know!

Toooootally. Is Erin gonna have to brain a bitch with War and Peace? Yes. Before semester is over, yes she is.

From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
Well, it's certainly a tempting mental image, no? Salieri fucking Mozart over his composition desk, commanding that he compose at the same time, quill skidding all over his staff paper with each thrust?

Is Erin gonna have to brain a bitch with War and Peace? Yes. Before semester is over, yes she is.

Better than braining someone with Kafka, which is my current plan of action. Either that or sleeping with my adviser. GOOD TIMES :O

Date: 2008-03-01 07:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-los.livejournal.com
...HOT. *cough* k, now I really do have to write something for them.

Kafka = too thin for real damage, only good for paper cuts. You obviously didn't choose your emphasis with the right definition of value in mind: that being the lethality of your source materials.

Um, apparently aforementioned fanart journal is closed for business, the girl having left fandom 4 eva and taken her artstuffs with her. Sad!

Date: 2008-03-01 08:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
WHAT WHAT?! She peaced out? I suppose that was due to LJ's whole reign of terror act a while back when they going all ape-shit on the HP fan-artists. Bunch of jerks. That's awful sad because her art was wonderful... let me take a gander at my hard drive and see if I have it stored somewhere. Back in a mo'.

This (http://www.liekwhoa.org/images/amadeus2.jpg) is the one piece of hers that I could find, it's not favorite, but it is nice.

What's your major? Did you enjoy the supposed best four years of your life?

Date: 2008-03-01 08:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
Oh that reign of terror. I tend to forget it happened b/c it was reeeeeally stupid.

Thx!

Double in English and History (with an accidental emphasis in Russian and an on-purpose emphasis in Brit 19th c. history), with a minor in Spanish that I dropped like, a month ago b/c of how crap-tacular our upper-level language courses in that department turned out to be. You?

Enjoyed? Um, hmm. Ambivalence! I has it.
From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
Ah, yes, ambivalence. I'm currently moping about in it. I fear that rescue teams may be needed to fish me out of it soon. I mean, if taking to my bed and watching hours of Doctor Who is any indication.

I'm a Comparative Literature major with a concentration in German and American Lit, and I'm a Jewish Studies minor. My whole, erm, academic career actually has a Jewish studies slant (yes, I hope the fact that I wrote Chosen slash is so much raunchier for you now). I just finished applying to MA programs for Jewish studies... CUZ I IZ BONKERS.

Man, I know there are things I should be doing today, but this is way more fun.
From: [identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
I mean, if taking to my bed and watching hours of Doctor Who is any indication.

Gaaawd. I hear that.

Oh no, see, I feel akin to you, b/c of that giant paper I wrote last year on Star Trek for my Jewish studies in American Texts concentration-class, which was like "Bajorans after Occupation (complete with 'Camps') in DS9: They Can Function As an Allegory for Post-Holocaust/Israeli Politics. Ferenghi: they're an unflattering allegory based on the production team's tumultuous relationship with the primarily Jewish studio executives, as they say in multiple interviews, and why has no one published a paper about any of this yet, again?"

If I could make it more pop-lit-y, I would submit that thing to Hebe. And they'd laugh at me. But it would be worth it. B/c I would be right, and it would be funny.

I'm supposed to be forming an Forming An Opinion on Kim of all things for India & Imperialism & Shit. Whatever, Kippling. You're not fun like slash and lj and stuff.

You're going into MA right away?! Props, but man, I NEED a year or two off before I try to get into grad school/a creative writing MFA, or I will gnaw off my arm. Can one do that? I will learn how to do that.

my bad?

Date: 2008-03-01 08:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reserve.livejournal.com
Oh god, Kim, I so read that. I think I read that right after I read She, by whathisface. You know whatshisface? He's written quite a bit of BritLit.

Also: That paper sounds awesome. I spend a lot of time faffing about and making fun of Phillip Roth and then going bonkers about demons in things like Ansky's The Dybbuk, which if you haven't read you need to, because it's so awesome and you will love how painfully creepy and oddly over-sexed it is.

PS: I'm reading your fic and you're funny. I mean, you're a really good writer and I'm really enjoying your stuff. I haven't written anything for DW yet, but I am working on something. It's going to happen...soonish.
From: [identity profile] x-losfic.livejournal.com
SIR WHATSHISFACE RIDER HAGGARD. Eugh, it's on my bookshelf still. Staaaaaaaring. Only the comic book version of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could make that cool.

OMFG the Kushner translation?! That's like, one of my favorite plays ever, over Angels in America, even. Not even the creep-ass love not by Harold Bloom stuck somewhere in there can change my utter love of that play! So. Good.

And Phillip Roth, how you be so funny?

Thanks! Ooooh, you should! I need new a DW fic fix like Portnoy needs to Complain.

AND YOU! YOU NEED TO BE MY NEW BEST FRIEND! I cannot believe you've read the Dybbuk. No one has read the Dybbuk. It's like, my purely creepy bit of weirdness and...wait! You do Russian lit! That makes more sense now. But yes, the Dybbuk. I made a friend read it and he...he drew a Tom Riddle parallel. I wanted to kick things.

I love the Kushner translation, but I also have Joachim Neugroschel (who, I swear, has translated everything, EVERYTHING WTF), and I've got one that was translated by David Roskies, I think. I'm a loser, what can I say.

Philip Roth is like, mah crazycrack. Operation Shylock is full of clonefucking gayness and I lurve it.

ANYWHO.

I don't know why no one reads the Dybbuk when it's soooo good!

Actually I was hunting Kushner stuff before I touched Russian lit and found the translation and discovered I love that play. But are the other translations different/good in idiosyncratic ways?

Eugh. So much cooler than Tom Riddle could ever hope to be. When she makes out with the Talmud instead of him while he watches? HOT.

Actually the imagery in that play is kind of Lorca- like to me.
